Underdog (term) An "underdog" is a person or group in a competition, usually in sports and creative works, who is popularly expected to lose. The party, team, or individual expected to win is called the favorite or top dog. In the case where an underdog wins, the outcome is an upset.

‘This record is extremely close to my heart. I have been messing with these compositions for a long time and never found the courage to record them. I felt I had an ace up my sleeve and could not use it for whatever reason.
